FEMS Microbes: We are looking for a new Co-Editor-in-Chief

We are looking for a Co-Editor-in-Chief to share leadership for its young open access journal, FEMS Microbes, for a first term of three years, starting in September 2025.

Ideally the new Co-Editor-in-Chief will be in post before the end of September, to allow for a handover period. Candidates will be interviewed on a rolling basis so early submissions of interest and applications are encouraged. Candidates will be interviewed via Zoom.

FEMS-ASM Mäkelä-Cassell Awardee 2025: Anita Tarasenko

Join us in congratulating Anita Tarasenko, the recipient of the FEMS-ASM Mäkelä-Cassell Award 2025. Anita is from Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, and is recognised for her compelling abstract on "Capsules, Pumps, and Phages: A New Strategy Against Antibiotic-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii."

This esteemed award supports early career scientists from both FEMS and ASM, providing an invaluable opportunity to present their research internationally and immerse themselves in the vibrant microbiology community of a partner country.

Early Career Microbiologist Awardee 2025: Merve Zeden

We are pleased to announce Merve Zeden as the winner of the Outstanding Early Career Microbiologist Award 2025. A Research Ireland Pathway Fellow and member of the Microbiology Society, Merve leads a research group dedicated to unraveling the molecular mechanisms of AMR in ESKAPE pathogens.

Merve's remarkable scientific independence is evident through her 16 first-author publications, several without her supervisor, and numerous last or sole-author papers.

Liebe ÖGMBT Mitglieder, am 12. Juni findet ein kostenfreies Webinar von Michael Mildner statt, in dem der Dermatologe der Medizinischen Universität Wien über die Funktion unserer Haut, die Forschungsansätze seines Labors und neue Therapieformen bei Hauterkrankungen spricht. Er stellt auch das Projekt Flower Power vor, bei dem er Pflanzenkundige aus der Bevölkerung durch das Ausfüllen eines Online-Fragebogens um Mithilfe bittet. Hier gibt es einen kurzen Einblick in den 25. Österreichischen Klimatag: Vom 23. bis 25. April diskutierten rund 200 Teilnehmende aus Wissenschaft, Politik und Gesellschaft in Innsbruck über Risiken, Folgen und Anpassung der Klimakrise. Unser Vorstandsmitglied Wolfram Weckwerth war mitverantwortlich für das Programm. Gemeinsam mit Kooperationspartner:innen der FH Campus Wien war Open Science am Forscher:innen-Tag der GTVS Kirschenallee dabei und ergänzte das umfangreiche Workshopangebot für die Wiener Schüler:innen. Neues aus dem Vienne Open Lab: Die Spezialkurse in den Sommerferien sind fast ausgebucht, letzte Plätze gibt es noch für das Summer Science Camp Profis (16-20 Jahre) und den Summer Science Day Mini (8-9 Jahre). Viel Spaß mit unseren Angeboten und beim Schmökern und Lesen wünscht das Open Science Team!

The Milan Declaration on the Crucial Role of Science in meeting Global Challenges stresses the importance of Science and Scientific Research in providing coordinated solutions to global problems and challenges.

Our purpose is to bring together citizens and scientists to support the Milan Declaration action items, communicate and engage citizens in the important role Science plays in solving challenges on a global level, educate the public, promote advocacy, and unite citizens, civil society, and scientific organizations in advancing Science as a pillar of global cooperation and trust.

FWF - Frauen in der Spitzenforschung

Bühne frei für Frauen in der Spitzenforschung

Im letzten Jahr konnten 60 Forscherinnen mit ihren Projekten in den FWF-Karriereprogrammen ESPRIT und Elise Richter reüssieren. Nun kamen sie in Wien zusammen, um ihre Auszeichnungen von Wissenschaftsministerin Eva-Maria Holzleitner sowie FWF-Präsident Christof Gattringer und Vizepräsidentin Ursula Jakubek entgegenzunehmen. Beim anschließenden Networking standen die Rahmenbedingungen für Karrieren in der Spitzenforschung im Mittelpunkt.

Der FWF fördert aktuell 2.363 Wissenschaftlerinnen in ganz Österreich – ein wichtiger Beitrag für die Karriereentwicklung von Frauen in Wissenschaft und Forschung. Darunter sind auch 60 neue Projektleiterinnen in der Postdoc- und Senior-Postdoc-Phase, die im Jahr 2024 eine Förderung im Rahmen der Karriereprogramme ESPRIT und Elise Richter einwerben konnten.

Am vergangenen Donnerstag versammelten sich die neu bewilligten Projektleiterinnen der FWF-Karriereprogramme in Wien, um ihre Förderauszeichnungen feierlich entgegenzunehmen und sich mit Kolleginnen zu vernetzen. Mit dabei: Frauen- und Wissenschaftsministerin Eva-Maria Holzleitner, FWF-Präsident Christof Gattringer und Vizepräsidentin Ursula Jakubek.

Wissenschaftsministerin Eva-Maria Holzleitner nutzte die Feier, um die Leistungen von Frauen in der Wissenschaft hervorzuheben: „Sowohl in der Politik als auch in der Spitzenforschung wird Diversität zunehmend anerkannt und geschätzt. Es liegt mir besonders am Herzen, Rahmenbedingungen zu schaffen, die es jungen Frauen ermöglichen, ihre Talente voll auszuschöpfen. Die Fähigkeit, an sich selbst zu glauben und sich gegenseitig zu unterstützen, bleibt der Schlüssel zum Erfolg.“

„An einem Abend wie diesem rücken wir weibliche Karrieren in der Spitzenforschung ins Rampenlicht, wir gratulieren allen ausgezeichneten Forscherinnen. Wir sind aber noch nicht am Ziel und setzen unsere Anstrengungen fort, die Rahmenbedingungen so zu gestalten, dass noch mehr Karrierewege von Frauen in die Spitzenforschung führen. Die Mithilfe aller Organisationen im Forschungsbereich ist zentral, um mehr Positionen für junge Forscherinnen zu schaffen, die dann auch erfolgreich Drittmittel einwerben können“, so FWF-Vizepräsidentin Ursula Jakubek und Präsident Christof Gattringer.

Forscherinnen-Bühnentalk: Wie Wissenschaft inklusiver werden kann

Nach Übergabe der Förderauszeichnungen sprachen vier Forscherinnen bei einem Bühnentalk über ihre Erfahrungen und Einschätzungen zum Thema Chancengleichheit in Wissenschaft und Forschung. Franziska Lorbeer (IMP – Forschungsinstitut für Molekulare Pathologie), Hanna Oppelmayer (Universität Innsbruck), Yvonne Zivkovic (Universität Graz) sowie Karen Kastenhofer (ÖAW, Obfrau des Elise-Richter-Netzwerks) diskutierten über Sichtbarkeit, gläserne Decken und die Frage, wie die Gleichstellung in den Wissenschaften weiter vorangebracht werden kann.

Frauenförderung, Gleichstellung und Diversität

Mit der Veranstaltung leistet der FWF einen Beitrag, um die Vernetzung exzellenter Forscherinnen in Österreich nachhaltig zu stärken. Die jährliche Auszeichnung und das Networking sind Teil zahlreicher Maßnahmen, um Frauen in der Spitzenforschung zu fördern und sichtbar zu machen. Dazu zählen neben spezifischen Maßnahmen für Forscherinnen auch die Implementierung eines Gleichstellungsplans, die langfristige Verankerung des Themas in einer Stabsstelle für Chancengleichheit in der Forschungsförderung sowie das konsequente Monitoring der Förderstatistik. Mit einem Tenure-Paket für Frauen bei den künftigen FWF-ASTRA-Preisen setzt der FWF darüber hinaus neue Akzente in der Frauenförderung. Generelles Ziel ist es, die Gleichstellung aller Geschlechter sowie die Anerkennung der Diversität von Wissenschaftler:innen und ihrer Forschungsvorhaben in allen Bereichen zu gewährleisten.

LISA: Advancing Austrian life science at the heart of Europe

Life Science Report Austria 2024

Dear Reader,

did you know that Austria’s life sciences sector is reaching new record highs?

According to the Life Science Report Austria 2024 the dynamic industry encompasses more than 1,170 companies, employing approximately 73,400 people and generating nearly €40 billion in total revenue. Of these, around 45,500 individuals are directly engaged in life sciences activities, which account for roughly €27 billion in revenue.

Between 2021 and 2023 alone, 146 new companies were established – many of them spin-offs from universities. During this period, existing companies increased their workforce by about 13% and boosted their revenues by 20%. Austria’s specialized biotechnology companies recently invested approximately €480 million in research and development. Over the past decade, domestic R&D spending has grown at a rate 1.5 times higher than the OECD average.

The Life Sciences Sector at a Glance
Austria’s life sciences sector encompasses medical technology, biotechnology, and the pharmaceutical industry.

Medical Technology:
Austria is home to 642 medical technology companies employing over 31,100 people. Since 2020, the sector has seen a 13% increase in revenue, reaching a total of €11 billion.
Biotechnology and Pharmaceuticals:
This segment is experiencing particularly dynamic growth. Together, 532 companies in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals employ approximately 42,300 people and generated nearly €29 billion in revenue—an increase of more than 25% over the past three years.
Pharmaceutical Industry:
Austria has 41 active pharmaceutical companies employing around 4,000 people – a 14% increase compared to 2020. These companies make a significant contribution to the national economy, with total revenues rising by 8% since 2020 to €2.1 billion in 2023.

Artificial Intelligence: A Key Driver of Innovation
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly pivotal role in the life sciences, accelerating research, enhancing diagnostics, and enabling personalized medicine. In Austria, research institutions are leading the way in integrating AI into their core processes: two-thirds are already in the testing or pilot phase, while 30% are actively deploying AI in their operations. The private sector is also advancing rapidly, with around half of all companies piloting key AI applications.

A major milestone in Austria’s AI-driven life sciences journey was reached in September 2024 with the founding of AITHYRA – Institute for Biomedical Artificial Intelligence by the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), in collaboration with the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation. As the first institute of its kind in Europe, AITHYRA focuses on developing cutting-edge, AI-supported research approaches to drive innovation in biomedicine.

Research and Innovation
The strong economic development of Austria’s life sciences is supported by a tight network of internationally renowned research expertise. A total of 56 institutions are completely dedicated to life science research or have significant activities in this field. Altogether, more than 24,300 life sciences related employees are working at 18 universities, 14 universities of applied sciences and 24 non-university research institutes, building the innovative foundation of the Austrian life science sector as a whole.

Besides high-quality research, the academic institutions also provide the sector with well-qualified people, representing a strong pillar in Austria’s educational system. In 2023, the total number of life science students at universities and universities of applied science amounted to more than 68,300. The total life sciences budget of Austrian research institutions most recently amounted to €1.91 billion.
