488 national and international visitors – 19 exhibitors from academia and industry
8 Employer & Career Workshops - Employer Booths - Talent Pool –
Interviews – Employer Pitches – CV Check – Job Profiles – Job Board
For the first time in 2022, the Life Science Career Fair© (LSCF) was held in person by the ÖGMBT in Vienna as a pre-event of the 14th ÖGMBT Annual Meeting. The LSCF is the first career fair for the whole life science sector in Austria, from academia to industry. As career platform, the fair enabled jobseekers, and potential employers to meet and to network.
The fair attracted a diverse target group composed of 4/5 students and 1/5 professionals with a Bachelor (10%), Master (30%) or PhD (60%) degree. Over 450 visitors arrived not only from Vienna and surroundings (60%), but also from all other Austrian federal states (60%) and from abroad (10%). Students and graduates received a representative overview of careers offered by the Austrian job market in the life science field. Young professionals had the chance to get in contact with a variety of potentials employers from academia and institutions, from start-ups and SMEs to global corporates. Meanwhile, the 19 exhibitors strengthened their branding as employers in Austria and were able to directly recruit young talents.
The supporting program offered interesting WORKSHOPS to envision personal career goals and inspiring presentations showcasing different career opportunities. Moreover, several recruiting tools facilitated the matchmaking of jobseekers with employers looking for skilled personal. Within the framework of EMPLOYERS Pitches, the exhibitors introduced themselves as potential employers. The TALENT POOL gave the exhibitors access to over 300 CVs uploaded by the visitors enabling recruiting before and after the fair. In addition, the dedicated INTERVIEW AREA allowed the exhibiting employer to invite potential job candidates for an interview on-site.
In the evening, the career fair transitioned into the opening of the ÖGMBT annual meeting followed by the Life Science Awards Austria ceremony, where the brightest young researchers received prestigious awards for their research efforts. Finally, the online flipbook “ÖGMBT Life Science Awards Austria – Success Stories 2010-2020” was presented. Afterwards all attendees and exhibitors were invited to a party in the night to celebrate the successful fair. The informal get-together also allowed for more networking and a strengthening of the Life Science field.
The feedback from students, scientists, professionals, and companies was incredibly positive. Dozens of employments were mediated thanks to due this year’s career fair. The large attendance proved the need in Austria for such an event to connect life sciences with the job market. Therefore, the career fair will become a recurring event by the ÖGMBT taking place in Vienna. The next Life Science Career Fair© will take place on the 16th of May 2023. Save the Date!

12:30 - 13:20 Career Workshop - A career in academia - what does that even mean?
A career in science lures with the prospect of work that, driven by curiosity, yields novel discoveries that may advance research and society. At the same time, it is full of challenges. In this session, two researchers from the Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science (CMESS) at the University of Vienna provide insights into the structures and building blocks of an academic career. Participants of the session benefit from the views of an early career researcher and an established professor: Margaret Vogel is a postdoctoral researcher with international experience in various fields of activity gained at different universities. Thomas Rattei heads both a research division and the Centre's Doctoral School. Both speakers will share their insights and experience with you: Which skills do you need? What are the Ups and Downs and Ins and Outs of an academic career? If you are unsure whether to pursue a career in academia, how to get there or what such a career might entail, this session is for you.
