Following the successful long-lasting tradition of Recombinant Protein Production (RPP) conferences organized by the Microbial Biotechnology Division of the EFB, we look forward to our next event hosted in the German twin town Ulm/Neu-Ulm, native town of Albert Einstein, picturesquely located on the river Donau in southern Germany.

From 7 to 9 October of 2025, we want to share our passion on recombinant proteins designed for various applications such as biocatalysis, food and bio-pharmacy. Protein, chassis and bioprocess engineering, impacts of production conditions and the model-enabled optimization and prediction of target proteins will be at the heart of the event. We look forward to an intensive exchange and exciting discussions, which are typical for the spirit of the RPP series!

The Milan Declaration on the Crucial Role of Science in Addressing Global Challenges is now open for public signing: https://www.febs.org/milan-declaration-science/.

Fifty-five Nobel Prize winners have already endorsed the Milan Declaration, which aims to fostering and enhancing Science as a cornerstone of global collaboration and strengthening civil society's engagement and trust in Science.

The Declaration was developed during the celebration of our 60th Anniversary in Milan on June 29, 2024, by FEBS and IUBMB – International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, FAOBMB – Federation of National Societies of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Asian and Oceanian Region, FASBMB – Federation of African Societies of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and PABMB – Pan-American Association for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

This Declaration aims:

  • to emphasize the vital role of Science in addressing global challenges and fostering sustainable development through ethical, inclusive, and unbiased collaboration.
  • to unite scientists and citizens in harnessing Science's transformative power to drive societal progress and build a more prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable future for all.
  • to inspire investments in scientific research, advocate for freedom of research and interdisciplinary innovation, and reaffirm core values such as peace, equity, and human dignity.

Sharing this call widely among your colleagues, collaborators, and networks will greatly enhance the visibility and impact of the Milan Declaration. Together, we can emphasize the crucial role of science in addressing global challenges.

We also encourage our members to sign the Declaration individually.

The Dessert that Changed the World

Tuesday, 11 February 2025 10:07

Have you ever heard about Fanny Angelina Hesse (1850-1934)? This German-American woman had the brilliant idea to use agar to grow microbes in the early 1880s. Agar or agar-agar, is a jelly-like substance consisting of polysaccharides obtained from the cell walls of some species of red algae. Nowadays often used as replacement of gelatin in vegetarian desserts. Since the 1880s though, agar (and the derivative, agarose) has als well found its way in virtually every laboratory in the life sciences. Sadly, still too few people have ever heard about her. Dr. Corrado Nai, a fantastic team of scientists and artists are sharing her story through a graphic novel. What makes this graphic novel truly unique? It is based on newly emerged genuine historical material about Mrs Hesse.

Learn more about the project on their new website: https://fanny-hesse-graphic-novel.site/
Find more information on Kickstarter, where the team ran a successful campaign in 2024: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jens-notroff/the-dessert-that-changed-the-world/ (donations are still possible)

Deadline Nearing - 24th FEBS YSF 2025

Wednesday, 04 December 2024 08:43

The 24th FEBS Young Scientists’ Forum (YSF 2025)

YSF 2025 logo

Dear Friends,

We are delighted to invite you to the FEBS Young Scientists' Forum 2025 (YSF 2025), a unique gathering designed to inspire and connect the next generation of leaders in molecular life sciences. To participate you need to apply until December 12, 2024. This year, we are excited to host the YSF with the motto “Inspired by Nature, Driven by Science” in the stunning region of Sapanca, where the beauty of nature seamlessly intertwines with the pursuit of scientific excellence.

YSF 2025 will take place from July 2nd to 5th, 2025, just before and in conjunction with the 49th FEBS Congress in Istanbul. A selected group of 100 PhD students and postdocs will meet a tremendous lineup of invited speakers to talk science and network next to the beautiful Lake Sapanca—a scenery to be remembered forever. Among breathtaking and relaxing landscapes, you will not only rejuvenate your spirit but also inspire your scientific endeavors.

YSF 2025 will have a multidisciplinary focus, covering various topics including new approaches in life sciences research, environmental biotechnology for sustainability, human disease mechanisms, and novel therapeutics. Experienced mentors and trainee moderators will facilitate scientific discussions and offer opportunities for professional development, ensuring active involvement rather than mere observation.

This forum is more than just a prelude to the main congress; it is a pivotal moment for young scientists to present their research, exchange ideas, and build a network of peers and mentors that will support their careers. FEBS grants will cover Congress registration, accommodation for both the YSF and the main FEBS Congress in Istanbul, and most travel expenses. Application details and eligibility criteria are available on the YSF Applications page.

We believe that the FEBS YSF 2025 will be an unforgettable experience, combining scientific rigor with the tranquility and inspiration of nature. We look forward to welcoming you to Sapanca and sharing this enriching journey with you. Join us for an inspiring start to the FEBS 2025 Congress, and let’s build the future of science together.

With warm regards,

H. Atakan Ekiz (YSF2025 co-Chair)
Duygu H. Karagülle (YSF2025 co-Chair)
