more than 550 attendees
40 exhibitors - 7 plenary speaker - 40 invited Speaker
14 Sessions - 220 Poster - 61 Short Talks
For the sixth time running, the ÖGMBT hosted Austrias most important Life Science Meeting at the UZA1 University Campus in the nations capital city, Vienna. The former University of Economics (WU) - which is currently home to the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) - proved to be the ideal site for a conference, which for the first time aimed to break out of the rigid corset of conventional scientific meeting and offer a uniquely diverse program under this years motto:
Life Sciences meet Entrepeneurship
Throughout the last years, the Annual Meeting had already established itself as the biggest hot-spot of the national Life Science scene. The 2014 edition expanded upon the regular program of bioscientific sessions with talks and posters, with the banner Life Sciences meet Entrepeneurship creating a strong connection between research and business. The specifically designed Entrepreneurship Track was complemented by the session Science in Biotech Companies. The link between the two spheres was drawn by the LifeScience Circle, organised by LISAvienna, a scientific get-to-gether dedicated to networking and exchange.
A Network of Ideas
On the other end of the spectrum, the program was improved in scientific value and diversity by the inclusion of plentiful networking and satellite events , such as the Bioinformatics Round table and the Biophysics satellite meeting. At the same time, young scientists were approached with seminars focusing on career-oriented soft skill workshops like „How to write a paper“ by Eva Müller or „The purpose of research“ by Lukas Madl. In that way, despite the vast diversity of attendees most, if not all, interests were able to be engaged. It is not surprising, that the general feedback was positive throughout. Wolfgang Weinkum, Marketing Manager and Organiser of one of the business workshops, spoke of an "excellent event with possibility to network with a lot of key opinion leaders from biotech, academics, key universities and non-university research institutes". Accredited represantatives of the (bio-)scientific media, including Chemie Report and Transkript, were on site to report their impressions of the meeting.
Mirror Of Research Quality
As is the tradition, the meeting was also the stage for many young and aspiring scientists and their research. Two awards each were handed out for extraordinary research (Karoline Kollmann and Christian Gruber/Andreas Loos) and PhD theses (Michael Tscherner and Christoph Hasenhindl) Alongside, further prizes for three inspiring scientific talks (Mario Kuttke, Jonas Ramoni and Simone Kurz) and 12 posters (Antonio Biundo. Eva Maria Putz, Andrea Düregger, Christina Andrea Müller, Eva Stappler. Justyna Nocon, Iulia Danciu, Stefan Unterweger, Alba Hykollari, Andreas Weinhäusel, Anna Bachmayr-Heyda, Verena Bachmann and Stefan Hofbauer) at the meeting were awarded during the closing ceremony. The Austrian Young Glycoscientist Awards went to Markus Tomek and Elisabeth Svehla, for the best Glycobiology-related talk and poster, respectivley. Josef Glößl, Head of ÖGMBT, pointet out the “admirable range and quality of fundamental bioscientific research with potential for application, which is being conducted at Austrian institutes”. This was mirrored in the Scientific Committee of this years Annual Meeting, which comprised almost the entirety of Viennas Universities and Academic Insitutes alike:

Exhibition
One particular concern of the ÖGMBT is the stimulation of communication between academia and industry. With 40 exhibitors who informed the participants about their products and services the exhibition was fully booked.
Wolfgang Weinkum (PALL), exhibitor and organiser of a workshop later described the meeting as an "Excellent event with possibility to network with a lot of key opinion leaders from biotech, academics, key universities and non-university research institutes"
The diverese program of the 6th ÖGBMT Annual Meeting featured 7 plenary speakers, a further 40 invited speakers and 61 short talks, held in a manner of 14 themed sessions, which covered the entire range of bioscientific research fields:

Another scientific perspective was added by the poster session and walks: 220 Posters were submitted, with young scientists in particular using the opportunity to promote their research for the first time in front of an interested, like-minded audience - which was also engaged by several school students invited in the OpenScience project – and as a smooth conversation starter during social breaks.
The Entrepreneurial Adventure
The strong focus on entrepreneurship was apparent in the session assigned to Science in Biotech Companies, chaired by Michael Bergmann and featuring invited speakers Tilmann Bürckstümmer (Haplogen Genomics, Austria), Thomas Felzmann (Activartis Biotech GmbH, Austria), Dorothee Holm-von Laer (ViraTherapeutics GmbH, Austria), Lukas Paul (Lexogen GmbH, Austria) and Patrick Sagmeister (Exputec GmbH, Austria). The following Entrepreneurship-Track allowed attendees an intimate look at the Ups and Downs in the lifes of young entrepeneurs like Frederik Debong (mySugr GmbH, Austria). Sanja Selak (ORIGIMM Biotechnology GmbH, Austria), Franz Obermayer (Panoptes Pharma GmbH, Austria) and Karl Skriner (DRDX GmbH, Germany).
Rounding up the links between Life Sciences and Entrepreneurship, Irene Fialka (INits) and Rudolf Dömötör (WU, ECNetwork) - who were responsible for establishing the cooperation with ÖGMBT along with Joachim Seipelt (AWS) - held an interesting podium discussion to conclude upon the acquired perspectves. Irene Fialka seemed content with the outcome of this years focus, summing up the project accordingly:
„The 4 Entrepreneurs presented their personal stories and answered many questions from the audience that participated in the discussion very actively. That the entrepreneurship track seemed to be one of the most interesting topics was shown by the highest number of registrations amongst the breakout sessions. Despite the difference of personalities, technologies and diseases adressed there was common sense: about the importance of the definition of goals to be prepared for the roller coaster, how much fun it is to be entrepreneur and how high the learning curve. On top of all that, failure would not stop all four speakers from starting it all over again as it is part of the (ad)venture.“
Broadening ones horizon and keeping an open mind has become one of the integral characteristics of the scientific field. As a society that strives to empower these values, ÖGMBT has always been proud to expand upon the regular conference procedures with additional satellite and networking events. Be it the diversification of subjects (like featuring Bioinformatics and -physics in assigned seminars), workshops focussing on valuable soft skills or career- and education-related social sessions: the widespread approach resembled the diversity of interests present at the meeting.
Bioinformatics Round Table was started in 2011 by Thuan Christine Huynh Buu, Bernhard Knapp and Christian Siehs. The idea for the round table discussion was born at the Bioinformatics Stammtisch at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria in Hagenberg, as an opportunity for students to meet their professors outside the university. Main goal is to connect researcher and students, bridging gaps and enabling participants to share experiences and best practice. Despite the early hours and limited advertisement some 30 young and more senior researcher were interested and joined the session before the official start of the annual meeting. Bernhard Knapp opened the session and Christian Siehs gave an overview on the broad range of bioinformatics aspects and tools , including anekdotes and practical hints. The first part of the satelite event was finished with the excellent key note by Amos Bairoch, who talked about the important but many ties neglected topic of curation within the bio and life sciences. The second part of the satellite was labeled "Meet the Bioinformatics Experts " and numerous distinct bioinformatics experts from Vienna answered and discussed with the participants and other interested scientists. Among others topics like sequencing and analysis, structural bioinformatics, computational systems biology, networks and functional analysis, biological knowledge discovery and data management were covered. Thuan Christine Huynh Buu closed the successful first bionformatics satelite after 4 hours of interesting, lively and also intense interaction between bioinformaticians and participants of the OGMBT annual meeting. more info
Biophysics Austria event had invited contributions covering the whole range of the field - this year with a particular focus on theoretical Biophysics. The Session Chair was Bojan Zagrovic of the Max F. Perutz Laboratories Vienna and Young PI Talk was held by Chris Oostenbrink, University of Natural resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), Vienna. more info
„How to write a paper“ was held by Eva Müller, a Ph.D. biologist turned science writer and gave those interested answers to the most relevant questions when it comes to developing a clear and conclusive story line for your scientific manuscript : a catchy title, convincing abstract, an intrudoction that arouses interest or a compelling discussion could be the essential factors for spicing up your publication. more info
The purpose of research What is science all about? Why is research important? Intriguing questions asked by Lukas Madl (Tecnet equity). In his workshop, he discussed the opinions of famous thinkers, trends today, chances and risks for the future. To his mind, both pure scientific endeavour on the one hand and new technologies on the other can serve humanity - if handled with care and responsibility.
ÖGMBT Career Day once again aimed to reflect upon the links between science and business: booths maintained by Life Science companies and service providers alike were spread across the foyer to provide relevant information to curious attendees. The “Wine & Science” event deserves a specific mention, as it allowed attendees to open up a casual conversation to business owners/leaders like Prof. Katinger of Polymun or Mr. Perklitsch of Mediatum in a relaxed and informal environment.
Shaking Up Early-Stage Process Development (PALL) demonstrated a high-throughput screening technology for small-scale fermentation and cell culture experiments. Furthermore fortèBIO (a Division of Pall Life Sciences) will demonstrate their newest technology for label free protein analysis for drug discovery and bioprocess monitoring. Wolfgang Weinkum, organiser of this satellite later described the meeting as an "Excellent event with possibility to network with a lot of key opinion leaders from biotech, academics, key universities and non-university research institutes"
Infusion in small rodents with osmotic pumps in the interests of 3R (Charles River) featured the application and handling of ALZETs miniature, implantable pumps, which deliver test compound solutions at continuous and controlled rates, for research in laboratory animals. They can be used for systemic infusion as well as for targeted delivery - for instance to specific organs or the CNS.
Wissen_scha(f)ft_Berufe was the motto of the final conference day. More than 100 students between the age of 13 and 17 years were invited by their respective schools to join the Meeting and breath the scientific air of a conference. A specially organised poster walk, as well as several workshops such as DNA isolation and blood typing, were organised by OpenScience in cooperation with the ÖGMBT. The schedule was rounded off by short talks about potential educational careers in the life sciences. more info
The Life Science Circle by LISAvienna was held opened by Josef Glößl (ÖGMBT), Peter Halwachs and Johannes Sarx (both LISAvienna). The key note lecture about Entrepreneurship in the Life Sciences was held by Franz Obermayer, CEO of Panoptes Pharma. After conclusion of the plenary, the attendees were left among themselvs to socialise, network and discuss the implications of the connections between business and sciences. more info
The 6th ÖGMBT Annual Meeting had a multifaceted program on offer: next to contributions by academic participants, the entrepeneurial focus of this years addition allowed for an additional valuable perspective within the scientific spectrum of the conference. The experience was appreciated by attendees, organisers and media alike.
