Symposium
Data Science for Personalized Medicine
Recent Advances and Future Directions
Tuesday, June 9, 2015, 14:30‐18:00
Medical University of Vienna, Spitalgasse 23, 1090 Vienna, BT 88, 2nd floor, Jugenstilhörsaal
About the symposium:
Personalized Medicine mainly aims at translating a patient’s genetic, other biomolecular or clinical
information into individualized diagnostic or therapeutic decisions that are specifically tuned or
optimized toward that patient’s organism.
Success in this endeavor increasingly entails the strong need for methods and techniques from Data
Science – a scientific field that unites the latest accomplishments of statistics, mathematics,
computer science (informatics) and related areas – to optimally extract the information contained in
the data. To meet the current needs in this field, the Center for Medical Statistics, Informatics and
Intelligent Systems (CeMSIIS) at the Medical University of Vienna has created a focused research area
bundling expertise at the center for optimal contributions to research projects in personalized
medicine – see cemsiis.meduniwien.ac.at/ds4pm.
This symposium presents a mixture of past work and future plans to highlight the major directions of
Data Science for Personalized Medicine (DS4PM) at the Medical University of Vienna. It aims at
addressing clinicians, biologists or other life scientists together with researchers from data science in
order to spur relevant future research in Vienna and beyond.
