The 16th MiPconference MiP2026 aims to address current challenges and emerging opportunities in mitochondrial diagnostics, prevention, and therapy across a broad spectrum of health conditions. Mitochondria play a central role in cellular homeostasis, and their dysfunction is implicated in a highly heterogeneous group of disorders, ranging from primary mitochondrial diseases to common multifactorial conditions, including metabolic, neurodegenerative, and inflammatory pathologies, many of which are related to obesity.

Why worry about diagnosis when evidence-based pathways to therapy and rehabilitation are missing? When is prevention the best therapy? Why trust in a therapy when time-course studies lack mitochondrial functional diagnostics?

Contributions are welcomed from both basic and clinical research, reflecting the need for integrative approaches in mitochondrial medicine. In addition to primary genetic defects, secondary mitochondrial dysfunction is increasingly recognized as a critical driver of disease progression, giving rise to complex feedback loops that exacerbate comorbidities, particularly in ageing. Understanding these mechanisms on the basis of reproducible and quality-controlled experimental evidence is essential for advancing diagnosis, stratification, and therapeutic intervention.

By bringing together researchers and clinicians across disciplines, this focused symposium seeks to foster dialogue that goes beyond the exchange of current knowledge. A key objective is to harmonize diagnostic methods, critically examine key definitions, bridge disciplinary divides, and promote truly translational approaches that link mechanistic insight with clinical implementation.
