Title:

Hypercrosslinked polystyrene beads with surface-immobilized LPS-binding ligands and their clinical applications. 

Abstract:

A novel type of hemoperfusion device is introduced. This device contains LPS-selective polymeric beads of intrinsic micro- and mesoporosity. The implication of this approach is the directed removal of dissimilar therapeutic targets, thus, a high prominence in the treatment of sepsis and septic shock. The results of the multicenter randomised clinical study (NCT04827407) have recently been published. It is shown that in critical patients with septic shock, vital functions and sepsis biomarkers levels improve upon the treatment, yielding a significant short-term survival benefit and a trend towards long-term one. An overview of the polymer structure and the most recent and currently enrolling clinical studies will be given.
