To Wednesday, 6. July 2016

The European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB) aims to be the voice of biotechnology in Europe, promoting the safe, ethical use of the biosciences for the benefit of society.  The flagship Congress of the EFB will take place this July in Krakow, Poland.  Over 1,000 biotechnologists will participate in the extensive scientific programme.  To view the programme click here.

The Opening Plenary Lecture on Sunday 3rd July will be given by Emmanuel Charpentier on genome editing using the CRISPR-Cas system.  This will be followed by the plant biotechnologist, Bob Goldberg, who is the leading USA authority on the global challenge of how to feed an expanding population from less land in the era of global warming.

World leaders in their respective fields will present the 25 invited lectures for each of the symposia, which have been organised in five streams over 3 days.  The streams focus on plant and environmental biotechnology, medical biotechnology, systems and synthetic biology, industrial biotechnology, and tools and products.  Applied biocatalysis and recombinant protein production feature prominently in at least three streams.

Each symposium will feature 20-minute oral presentations selected from the submitted abstracts.  These talks will provide opportunities for colleagues from laboratories in Central Europe and from countries linked to our partners in the Asian Federation of Biotechnology to present their work.

To close the congress, Jens Nielsen will present the Novozymes EFB Patron’s Lecture on yeast as a platform for systems and synthetic biology.  We are also delighted to welcome Tai Hyun Park as another plenary speaker; he is a leader in the field of nanobiotechnology and from the Asian Federation of Biotechnology.

The formal scientific programme will be augmented by satellite meetings on Sunday 3rd July before the formal opening of the congress, and by highlight events and sponsored poster sessions in the afternoons of both Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th July.  All registrants are encouraged to submit their work as a poster.  Topics at the highlight events will include a Publications Workshop designed to help young biotechnologists get their work published in international journals, sessions on Patenting and IPR, the Bioeconomy, and a Science and Art presentation.

The industry trade exhibition will provide opportunities to meet publishers, learned societies and supply companies. There will be ample opportunity for social interaction and the building of collaborations, culminating on the evening of 5th July with a Networking Evening and Gala Dinner in an atmospheric location.
