Last week, we welcomed postdocs and mentors to Porto for the FEMS Summer School for Postdocs, bringing them together for a week of learning, networking, and collaboration.

Under this year’s theme, "Microbial solutions for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals", participants are exploring how microbiology can help address global challenges and contribute to a more sustainable future.

From food additives to biodegradable plastics, organic acids are everywhere in modern life. One of them, L-malic acid, is widely used in the food and beverage industry, giving products a characteristic tart taste. Despite its growing industrial relevance, most malic acid is still produced either from fossil resources or from sugar-based microbial fermentation, which competes with food production. In one of our latest blog, Alessia Mauri explains how researchers are attempting to produce malic acid from a carbon derived source from CO₂ and how this process was improved step by step. Just like all other organisms, plants are not alone in responding to changes in their environment. Complex microbial communities inhabit the rhizosphere, the area of soil surrounding plant roots. Here, soil microbes interact with each other and with the plant, contributing to the plant’s dynamic adaptation to the environment.
