The Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) is Austria’s central non-university research and science institution. Three of the OeAW institutes are conducting research in the field of life sciences. One of them, the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA), was established in 2002 and, since then, has developed into one of Europe’s top-level institutions in molecular biology and biomedicine.

We are now seeking a strong and creative scientist of high profile to serve as SCIENTIFIC DIRECTOR (F*M) at the INSTITUTE OF MOLECULAR BIOTECHNOLOGY (IMBA) Candidates should have made seminal contributions to the fields of basic molecular biology and/or biomedicine and enjoy an outstanding international reputation among his/her colleagues. He/she is expected to conduct ground-breaking cutting-edge research that, ultimately, may find its application. The success of their research should also be reflected in peer-reviewed third-party funding generated from public and private sources. The ideal candidate will also possess strong leadership qualities and be well connected within the international scientific community.

We offer an attractive recruitment package that includes an internationally competitive salary, a substantial annual research budget (personnel, consumables, investments) as well as access to the entire research infrastructure of the Vienna BioCenter campus, a vibrant research campus with more than 1.400 senior and junior postdoctoral scientists as well as 700 high-potential students from at least 40 different countries. Various scientific facilities provide a wide range of novel technologies, instrumentation, and techniques to enable researchers at IMBA to achieve their goals. Core resources comprise scientific and technical support for stem cell research, transgenic animal models, advanced microscopy, metabolomics, flow cytometry and cell sorting, next generation sequencing, and preclinical imaging and phenotyping. Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply. The term of appointment is initially limited to 5 years with an opportunity for extension, depending on external review.

Please send a curriculum vitae (including publication list and overview of acquired third party funding), cover letter and research program for IMBA to Heinz Fassmann, President of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, at IMBA.search.director@oeaw.ac.at
