Job Description

M.Sc. student (d/f/m), Schaftenau, Tyrol, Austria

6,663! That is the number of reactions that describe the Chinese Hamster Ovary cell metabolism.

Genome scale metabolic models have the potential to shorten bioprocess development timelines by enabling the insilico simulation of experiments. With FBA (flux balance analysis) it is possible to use these models to predict, for example optimized media compositions. As part of your master's thesis, you will evaluate different models and data sets to investigate the predictive ability of the models. Furthermore, you will use one of the models to suggest possible improvement strategies to current cell culture processes. The work is scheduled for 9 months and needs to be completed in 2022.

Your key responsibilities:

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Evaluate data and process it for the use in FBA
  • Interpret the model predictions of FBA and put it into context with scientific literature
  • Suggest possible improvement strategies based on your model predictions

Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion:

Novartis is committed to building an outstanding, inclusive work environment and diverse teams representative of the patients and communities we serve.

Minimum Requirements

What you’ll bring to the role:

Essential:

  • M.Sc. student of life sciences or related field (e.g. biotechnology or bioprocess engineering)
  • Interest in data analysis and modelling
  • Curiosity and interest in scientific problem solving
  • Motivation, creative thinking and teamwork skills

Desirable requirements:

  • First experience with Python or MATLAB

You’ll receive:

You will be working on an exciting and industrially relevant topic and gaining valuable skills in the emerging field of metabolic modeling.
