Master project to study virus control (not Covid-19!)

Plant viruses are harmless for humans but as dangerous for their hosts as SARS & Co for us. Plants have nevertheless developed sophisticated defense mechanisms to control virus spreading. We want to understand how plants prevent virus entry in the stem cells that give rise to their progeny. For a passionate and motivated master student, we offer a project contributing to define the role of RNA interference for virus control in the shoot apical meristem and the gametophytes. The project will involve visualization of virus movement through imaging of fluorescent proteins in planta, molecular cloning, plant work, and various molecular biology analytic techniques.

We give preference to a candidate with previous lab experience and background in plant biology and/or epigenetic regulation, but a lack of it can be compensated by firm commitment to read and learn. The student will start in January 2021, supervised by Dr. Marco Incarbone in the Mittelsten Scheid lab at the Gregor Mendel Institute. If interested, please send a short CV and a motivation statement to marco.incarbone@gmi.oeaw.ac.at or ortrun.mittelsten_scheid@gmi.oeaw.ac.at.
