Ribbon Biolabs is a small biotech company based in Vienna developing the next technological wave of error-proof DNA synthesis.

With our approach, we are challenged to develop a cost-efficient platform to produce long DNA molecules, thereby enabling a new generation of biopharmaceutical processes and other synthetic biology products.

The company is an early-stage startup with ambitious growth plans and is currently seeking to expand its team with a Senior Scientist with expertise in the synthesis, purification and quantification of nucleic acids.

In your position as Senior Scientist you must have strong team leading abilities and innovative thinking. Reporting to the CEO, the Senior Scientist will manage a small team of molecular biologists to design, plan and execute experiments as needed to ensure feasibility and scalability of our DNA synthesis platform.

Ribbon Biolabs counts with multiple sources of funding including public grants and VC equity. The company has its own dedicated lab in the city of Vienna (Austria) and is constituted by a small but agile team.

 

Experience and Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry or related field if applied to the study of nucleic acids.
  • Proven expertise in synthetic DNA technologies
  • Deep knowledge of analytical chemistry of DNA
  • Knowledge of analytical and preparative techniques of capillary electrophoresis
  • Demonstrated abilities in bioinformatics
  • Experience and ability to manage, train and mentor scientific staff
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with automated liquid handlers
  • Knowledge of microfluidic technologies
  • Experience with DNA sequencing techniques (Sanger, NGS)
  • Industry experience

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Perform general planning of the scientific milestones and technological strategy of the company
  • Guide and direct the execution of the experimental strategy by the team
  • Direct and implement the design of experimental protocols and data analyses
  • Perform the design of DNA sequences and bioinformatic analyses
  • Contribute to the IP strategy including directing FTO analyses, patent definition and writing and, together with the rest of the team, keep an updated overview of patent and scientific literature
  • Manage and supervise a small research team
  • Supervise lab management including its organization, equipment maintenance and safety standards
  • Responsible for completing lab budget
  • Ensure proper lab documentation is in place
  • Responsible for running lab meetings
  • Write grants, reports and publish scientific papers
