PhD Position in Neuromuscular Research

A PhD position is available at the Center of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Medical University of Vienna, in the project „Molecular Mechanisms of Plectin-related Muscular Dystrophy“ funded by a recently awarded stand-alone FWF project to Lilli Winter.

The laboratory investigates molecular mechanisms of muscular dystrophies (MDs), devastating diseases of the human skeletal muscle. In this project, focusing on plectin- and desmin-related myofibrillar myopathies (MFM), we aim to provide novel insights into the sequential steps that lead to cellular dysfunctions in various types of MDs and to clarify the downstream molecular pathways and fundamental mechanisms that lead from myofiber alterations and resulting cellular stress to weakness and damage. By combining genetic, biochemical, cellular, molecular, and physiological approaches we try to yield a more integrated picture of how skeletal muscle copes with stress under normal conditions and in disease.

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student from whom we expect a keen interest in neuromuscular diseases, a strong motivation in working with cell cultures, and a high degree of scientific curiosity. Applicants should have an excellent background in molecular biology, very good experimental skills and a Msc degree in molecular life sciences, biochemistry, or equivalent. Experience with the analysis of protein-protein interactions, cell culture techniques, immunofluorescence microscopy and live cell imaging, and mouse work will be an added advantage. Good communication skills, independence, and a sense of responsibility are required.

The recently refurbished Center of Anatomy and Cell Biology offers an international environment where we value open communication and collaborative team spirit. Regularly held lab meetings and center ceminars give the possibility for fruitful scientific discussions.

The starting date is as soon as possible and we offer up to 3 years of appointment according to the salary scheme of the FWF (30 Stunden/ 2.112,40 € brutto per month).

Applicants should submit a CV, a list of publications and presentations, a brief description of research interests, and names and contact details of 2 references. Short listed candidates will be notified and invited for interviews.
